PROJECT HALO’S DRIVING FORCES
The Silent Crisis: Protecting Our Children from Digital Harm
"There is no greater priority than the safety and well-being of our children." – Australian Federal Police
In the digital age, our children’s safety is no longer just a matter of physical protection; it extends to the virtual world in which they live, learn, and grow. With the rapid advancement of technology, children are increasingly vulnerable to harm, not just from predators, but from the devastating consequences of digital manipulation. One of the most horrifying threats emerging in Australian schools today is the use of deepfake technology to create and distribute explicit and pornographic images of minors.
This phenomenon is not just an abstract fear—it is happening now. Real children, real schools, and real families are suffering from the consequences of this digital assault. The emotional toll on these children and their families is profound, and it’s time we take a stand against this growing epidemic.
"To see a child suffer emotionally, psychologically, and socially from something they did not create is the cruelest form of violence." – Child Protection Advocate
1. Bacchus Marsh Grammar Incident (February 2025):
At Bacchus Marsh Grammar in Victoria, approximately 50 female students were targeted through AI-generated explicit images. A male student allegedly used artificial intelligence to create and distribute these images, leading to significant distress among the victims. Cybersecurity experts have labeled such actions as sexual abuse, emphasizing the need for stricter penalties.
2. Sydney Public School Case (January 2025):
A Year 12 student from a Sydney public school is under investigation for allegedly creating deepfake pornographic profiles of female classmates using AI. The student reportedly manipulated innocent photos from social media and school events, distributing them through fake social media profiles. Education Minister Prue Car condemned the incident as "abhorrent," and both the NSW Police and the Education Department are involved in the ongoing investigations.
3. National Survey on Pornography Exposure (2022):
A national survey by the Queensland University of Technology's School of Justice found that the average age of first exposure to pornography among young Australians was 13.2 years for males and 14.1 years for females. This early exposure is linked to the development of violent attitudes toward women and contributes to the normalization of such content.
4. Google Reports on AI-Generated Abuse Material (March 2025):
Google informed Australian authorities that between April 2023 and February 2024, it received over 250 complaints globally about its AI software being used to create deepfake terrorism content. Additionally, dozens of reports highlighted the misuse of Google's AI program, Gemini, in generating child abuse material, underscoring the challenges in regulating AI-generated content.
5. Global Operation Against AI-Generated Child Abuse Content (February 2025):
A coordinated international effort led to at least 25 arrests related to the creation and distribution of AI-generated child sexual abuse content. This operation sheds light on the expanding misuse of AI in producing harmful material, affecting numerous countries, including Australia.

The Impact on Our Children: A Silent Crisis
The damage caused by these deepfake attacks extends far beyond the immediate shock. The long-term psychological and emotional impacts on children are profound and often invisible to the outside world. Children who are targeted by deepfakes often experience:
Loss of Trust: These attacks destroy children’s trust in others, especially their peers. The betrayal of privacy and dignity creates a sense of isolation, with the fear that their personal identity can be manipulated without consent.
Depression and Anxiety: Many children suffer from heightened anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress after being targeted by deepfake pornography. They often feel helpless, as if they are living in a world where their privacy can be violated without consequence.
Social Withdrawal: The stigma attached to these fabricated images often leads to social isolation. Children pull away from friends and family, reluctant to face the shame and bullying that may follow.
Educational Setbacks: Victims of deepfake attacks often see their academic performance decline as a direct result of the emotional distress they experience. Their focus and ability to engage in school can be severely affected.
Increased Vulnerability: For children already facing challenges in their personal lives, deepfake attacks can push them into greater vulnerability, heightening the risk of further exploitation or harm.
A Call to Action
The issue of deepfake pornography and its impact on children cannot be ignored. The stories shared here represent just a fraction of the reality facing children across Australia. It is crucial that we take immediate and decisive action to protect the most vulnerable members of our society—our children.
Project HALO is dedicated to addressing this issue through the use of AI-driven solutions and collaborative efforts with law enforcement to prevent, identify, and disrupt these digital attacks. Together, we can create a safer, more secure digital environment where children can explore and learn without fear of exploitation.
If you or someone you know has been affected by deepfake pornography or digital exploitation, please seek support. No child should have to endure this pain, and we stand united in the fight to protect them.
